The current University of Worcester Rowing Club was founded in 2004 by a small minority of students who recognised that a university built next to a river had one major element missing....a University Rowing Club!
Over the years, the Club has plodded along with financial backing from nothing more than membership fees, fundraising and sponsorship to make ends meet - building a small but influential existence in the University.
In 2006, a larger group of University freshers from all backgrounds came together with a new or existing interest in the Club and decided to make something of it. Since then, through the hard work and support of these people and the new members that have joined since, the passion has grown and is now beginning to be recognised throughout the University and Rowing World.
The year of 2008-2009 was one of the most influential and important years for the Club to date with the Club professionalising. With the willpower and desire to be the best, the voluntary committee and club members got to work on improving the club's prospects.
Within 12 months the Club went from 22 members, 2 boats and 4 blades to 30 full members, 4 boats (2 x fours, 1 x eight & 1 x double), 20 blades, a paid part-time coach and two new small sponsors. These achievements were staggering and if not for the then current committee, members and predecessors this would not have been possible.
For the 2009-2010 season, despite many seniors graduating, the club continued to grow with over 40 members at the peak. For the first time the club was able to develop a squad structure, allowing the beginners to develop without the pressure of rowing with seniors immediately. As a result the development of the beginners is going to be much better for the club in the coming years.
Fundraising took a massive step forward with 2 supermarket bag-packs being highly successful, not to mention 3 world records broken in Crown Gate Shopping Centre - see news for more. The club has been been able to buy another pair, another coxed four and 18 more blades this year solely from our fundraising efforts.
The club saw its largest entry yet to BUCS regatta with many outstanding results. The most noteworthy event of the year however was having a men's coxed four attending the Henley Royal Regatta time trials.
