Re: Oxford University Boatman discusses wing riggers

Yup. As a sculler I rowed in an eight only occasionally but I too bear
the Donoratico scar.

Perhaps in 40 years' time there'll be folk writing in, recalling their
wing-rigger shin & knuckle injuries?

Re: The American Craftsman Project - Graeme King, King Boatworks

I have seen his wooden boats and they are beautiful and I read they last a long time. I also read many times that they are fast.

My questions:
Have King boats won any big races like Olympics or World Champs?
If not why does everyone say he is a legend?

I am interested in the Kingfisher in S.F. and would appreciate hearing from you.

It's always good to ask questions - & daft to swallow what we don't
understand. We're born to question: as soon as they learn to talk
bright kids start asking "Why?" about all they see & hear. Only by
questioning do we truly learn. After far too many years, I'm still
questioning, all the time. Finding better (= more rational) answers to

OOops - Re is ratio of inertial to viscous forces, not t'other way around.

I still have a scar from early 1970s, same boat, same place.

Nothing scales perfectly on water :)

An eight, although superficially very similar to a single (& to the
intermediate size classes of rowing shells), runs at a different
Reynolds number (ratio of viscous to inertial forces), Froude number
(ratio of boat velocity to gravitational wave velocity) & Strouhal

You probably seem like the perfect coach to second year rowers.

Depends how flashy you want to get! If you have GPS data of a scull
going down the course then try this free piece of software with Google
Earth

You can use it to show a real time "best line" or something
similar, and you could even highlight, add pictures/videos of points of

That's exactly how the old wooden Donoraticos were built - and I still
have the scars on the backs of my fingers from bashing my hands into
that damned cross bar!

Hi Caroline

I created something similar for a Triathalon Race - course maps, how
to get the event, local amenities.
Unfortunately the maps are gone now but you can see a similar map
here:

And someone has created one for the Boat Race:

Maybe this video might clarify.

With the three girls in black in the front you can see that their arms
are more or less parallel with the chain while they are pulling. However
just before the catch the arms are not parallel. Even though they had

Firstly, hello all. I know I've been gone for ages and ages, but I'm
still around really...!

Anyhoo.
Us safety folks at Thames RC got in to a bit of an email discussion
recently about building all sorts of snazzy things to use in Google

Tinus,

This I don’t understand at all.

Why would eliminating the vertical part around the catch and release on the
erg give a rower a sense of shortness or directness which can be copied in
the boat

What do you mean by “shortness or directness?”

Cordially,

Charles

We used to watch the London Rowing Club squad holding large weights
and 'bunny hopping' up and down the stairs outside their boathouse on
Tuesday evenings - very comical!

Carl, very clear and in a way it's a pity you chose it to be a silent
movie!

We've added it to the Rowperfect news roundup that publishes on
Friday. BTW did you 'shoot' the film yourselves?
